Getting Started With Life Management

The most common regret we have heard from people as they age is: I should have lived more. Somehow age flew by as I was just getting ready to live. Now I am ready to live but am running out of time.

To some this may be their reality right now. To some this shadow is just around the corner. To others it is a distant thought which is occurring with more and more frequency. And to others it is yet an irrelevant concern that they are sure will never ever happen to them.

This regret is the harshest reality of life and cannot be denied. It has been consistent through generations. In the mad rush times, this feeling has only increased as we have become more and more isolated from each other. All under the guise of being busy and socially connected. It is not infrequent to find a person with thousands of social friends having a lonely dinner at night while watching tv.

It is also not a surprise. Humans have known about this for a while. You may have heard or said, some of the following:

“You should manage your life better.”

“I wish I could get my life together.”

“Life management is really important, especially when you have so many responsibilities upon you.”

“You’ll lose control over your life if you don’t get a hold of it and manage it well."

Okay, so we have a problem, got it.

What is the solution? How can we manage our life better or how we can live it better? What does Life management even mean? What does living life truly mean? What do I gain by trying to live a life when eating a tasty sandwich seems more beneficial?

Does it necessarily mean embarking on some miraculous and enlightening journey and have our greater cause realized upon return? This might sound glorious but for most of us that’s not it. It is much simpler than that, but harder than I will simply do it when the time comes.

What is Life Management?

Life management is the ongoing pursuit of finding and maintaining balance between living a purposeful life, fulfilling our own needs, and those of people and environment around us, while at the same time working towards realizing our best potential.

Think this - At any given point, we need to juggle many different roles, all at once. And what’s more, we desire to excel in more than one area of our lives. Imagine trying to be a better mother, a good daughter, and a dedicated employee. Similarly imagine trying to be a better father, while trying to be a smarter investor and a more loving husband. Now imagine doing all of this while trying to realize our full potential. And yes at the same time worrying about that report which is due in one hour, or what should be dinner tonight, or just trying to avoid that fellow driver who has just cut in the lane abruptly.

Each and everyone one of these is demanding and difficult. Doing all of them at the same time, for the entirety of our lives? Can you even seriously imagine the enormity of the task?

This problem might sound vague but it definitely is not.

This happens simply due to survival paradox which determines one of the way our minds work. In this case, small but tangible things, say threat behind a bush in forest or a spill of a beverage near your phone, often carry greater urgency and clarity of consequences in our mind. While hugely impactful, but difficult to grasp problem of entire aspects of life getting compromised may not have the same clarity and magnitude, who of us has not compromised regular exercising or eating well, for getting something else done.

The demands of dynamic lives we lead today require that we have an equally wide and adaptive approach to managing them. As the saying goes - a good solution will at least match the extent of the problem.

Clearly, Life management is well beyond the ability and scope of simple to-do lists. Surely, it requires more than developing one more good habit, which will take your total count to four. It also requires much more than 30 day long streak of waking up on time. Or beyond trying to live out that video from yesterday about how to live stress free.

How to get started with Life Management

Managing life well, for sure, needs a different set of skills. These skills are not taught in schools. They are learnt through experiences of life. These include managing your purpose, attention, perspective, responsibilities, balance, and direction.

These may also sound vague and even overwhelming, but they again, are not. They are things we see in action around us all the time. We may not pay attention to it as such, but when we see the pattern we will know it.

This is why, it is possible that the otherwise smart elite college graduate may be a hot mess while the seemingly raw person who did not go beyond school may be good at living life and even investing. Turns out, life indeed is a great equalizer.

If you’re just getting started with life management, it’s better to review different areas of your life as the first step.

Let’s say you want to be more productive at work and learn new skills.

  • You could start by visualizing your ideal routine for work and the goals you want to achieve within a given time frame.

  • Along with work, set aside time for other aspects of your life as well. What time of the day would you dedicate to yourself, family, and other social relationships?

  • Now, for any particular goal- for example, learning a new skill- set small steps that you can manage within your routine. Then, set a time frame for yourself that you want to achieve the goal within.

  • Along the way, it’s important to learn about your behavior, problem points, etc. With the help of these insights, it is easier to learn and progress efficiently.

Taking all areas of your life into consideration is crucial. No matter how focused you are in achieving a goal in one area of your life, the world around us keeps going on. The varied expectations from us are still present. They could overlap, conflict, increase tenfold over time or go haywire any moment. Life keeps evolving and sometimes, in unexpected ways.

Hence, Life Management is not a task that you carry out at the start of the new month or on the noble New Year’s morning. This constant process requires effort in the beginning but takes a life of its own as you master it. Beyond that, you just have to enjoy the balanced and conscious space you have created for yourself.
